A TV station in Morocco has come under fire after they showed viewers how to cover up the signs of facial bruising.
The nationally broadcast segment showed a model having her black eyes covered up with make-up, with the host matter-of-factly explaining:
“After the beating, this part is still sensitive, so don’t press,” she says.
“Make sure to use loose powder to fix the makeup so if you have to work throughout the day, the bruises don’t show,” she continues.
During the tutorial, concealer and foundation is used to hide the “traces of violence against women.”
The segment’s host, Lilia Mouline, said that while it’s a subject they shouldn’t talk about, unfortunately it’s a fact of life for many women.
“We hope that these beauty tips help you carry on with your normal life.”
The video prompted criticism from viewers, who said the tutorial encouraged women to hide their abuse – rather than deal with those responsible.
An online petition was started to take action against the TV show, with the petition reading: “Do not cover domestic violence with makeup, condemn the aggressor!”
Channel 2M have since removed the video segment from their website, and issues an on-air apology for the “editorial error of judgement.”
Lilia Mouline, who presented the segment, said that they were “in no way” condoning domestic violence, but instead were providing solutions to women who, “for two to three weeks, are putting their social life aside while their wounds heal.”
