Amanda Knox was acquitted of murder in March 2015. But this wasn’t before enduring eight years of legal battles for allegedly killing her roommate Meredith Kercher, while they were both studying abroad in Perugia, Italy.
And now the 28-year-old, who finally returned to American soil in 2011, has been granted permission from the European Court of Human Rights to make a legal complaint against Italy.
Amanda claims she wasn’t given a fair trial and that during questioning she was interviewed in a language that she was not proficient in.
She adds that she was subject to “psychological pressure” and was even hit on the head by officers during interrogation.
Amanda maintains that the pressure she was put under led to her falsely accusing local bar owner Patrick Lumumba.
“The court’s acceptance of the appeal is great news,” said Amanda’s lawyer Luciana Ghirga. However he added that so much suffering has been caused, it didn’t give him “any satisfaction.”
Likewise Amanda’s former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, who was also convicted and acquitted of the murder, said it was time for people to “open their eyes on this affair.”
Since returning to the US in 2011, Amanda has graduated from the University of Washington with a creative writing degree. She’s also written for a Seattle paper and become engaged to musician Colin Sutherland.
