The South African-born presenter will be joining long-time anchor Mike McRoberts behind the desk from next week, and she acknowledges Hilary has left “considerably big shoes to fill”.

“I’m honoured to build on the trust she has helped create with Newshub. I’ve been working with TV3 since I was 17 years old in many different roles, and now I’m looking forward to joining Mike, and bringing New Zealanders the news each night supported by the strength of the Newshub team,” she said in a statement.

Samantha, who has previously worked as a presenter on Nightline and 3D for the network, is described as a “true master of her craft” by MediaWorks Acting Chief News Officer Richard Sutherland.

“Samantha brings a wealth of experience across news and current affairs. Her considerable presenting talent and own unique style means she will be a fantastic co-host with Mike McRoberts weeknights at 6 o’clock,” he said.

“The pair’s skill set ensures we will provide a professional, experienced news team that New Zealanders trust, building on the notable success of Newshub and our 6pm bulletin since its launch in February.”

Hilary made her final appearance on Newshub on Friday, after a career spanning over 23 years with TV3. The beloved broadcaster shed a few tears as co-anchor and close pal Mike paid tribute to her many years with the company, describing Hilary as a “much-loved” part of the family.
