Why we must all come to terms with the fact Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are just friends

It's a bitter pill to swallow, we know.

We don’t know about you but we never quite got over Brad and Jen’s split.

Yes, in the big scheme of things they were only married five years and they weren’t childhood sweethearts or anything like that. But they were the girl next door meets Hollywood heart throb – Hollywood’s golden couple – and we loved it.

We lapped up their romance and the tidbits they threw us in the form of the b&w wedding photos released following their closely guarded private wedding in 2000. We naturally took interest in their three-year remodelling project on their Beverly Hills mansion and we thought it was adorable that Jen got on so well with Brad’s mum.

When their separation was announced in 2005 we were probably as devastated as the golden couple themselves. Well, practically…

And while Brad quickly moved on with his Mr & Mrs Smith co-star Angelina Jolie, who he went on to marry and raise six children with, Jen stayed single for a while. She got serious for a bit with her The Break-Up co-star Vince Vaughn and eventually married Justin Theroux in 2015.

But her marriage to Justin only lasted two and a half years. And what do you know, Brad and Ange had shockingly split by then too. They’d announced their separation in 2016.

As sad as it all was… and it was sad… Brad and Jen were both single again!

The loved-up couple in 2004 – there was no hint of their marriage falling apart here. Sigh.

But if, like us, you got your hopes up and were sure of a rekindling of romance, you too would have been disappointed.

Of course rumours have been sparked more than once.

There was talk that the pair had been planning to meet in London while Jen was filming her newest movie, Murder Mystery. Then there were rumours that the pair were secretly meeting up at various places, including Brad’s beach house in Santa Barbara. There were even rumours the two had traveled to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to rekindle their love. Some say Brad confided in Jen during his bitter divorce battle with Angelina.

But it seems just that – they were only rumours.

This week we got excited all over again when we heard that Brad had attended Jen’s Christmas party and been one of the last to leave.

Jen had hosted a party over the weekend and among her guests were Gwyneth Paltrow, Lisa Kudrow, Tom Hanks, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon and, of course, Brad.

Brad was “among the first to arrive and the second to last guest to leave around 11 pm” an insider told Entertainment Tonight.

And it’s not the first time the exes have partied together. Brad also went to Jen’s 50th birthday in February.

Weren’t they adorable…

But Jen is still also friendly with Justin… She celebrated Thanksgiving with her ex-husband Justin Theroux in November.

So it seems Jen is simply pretty good at staying friends with her exes.

Well, there’s no point in holding a grudge is there. And if it didn’t work out the first time, what makes anyone think it would work out a second?

Friends is a very appropriate road to take.

And as the lyrics go for the Rembrandts song made famous by the sitcom that launched Jen to fame, Friends:

So no one told you life was gonna be this way

Your job’s a joke, you’re broke

Your love life’s D.O.A

It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear

Or even your year, but

And work began at eight

You’ve burned your breakfast, so far

But she didn’t tell you when the world has brought
