The top 10 etiquette rules you should never break when visiting someone’s home

How many of these would upset you?

The rules of being a guest in someone’s home can often be a little blurry, but it seems there are a few do’s and don’ts most of us agree on.

A study of the worst etiquette mistakes guests make has revealed the top 10 things considered to be rude – so take note!

Here are the top 10 things NOT to do when visiting friends and family over the summer months.

1. Being on your phone during a meal

Almost 90 per cent of people surveyed considered it terribly bad manners to use a phone during lunch or dinner, making it the biggest no-no of the bunch.

2. Asking for the Wi-Fi password

If you don’t use your phone, you won’t need to know how to use your hosts internet!

3. Wearing shoes on the carpet

If in doubt, take them off, because 64 per cent of people think it’s rude to wear shoes inside someone else’s house.

4. Looking in bedrooms without permission

This is a bit of an invasion of privacy, so stay out unless you are asked.

5. Looking inside the fridge without asking

The same thing applies to the kitchen hideaway.

6. Turning up to a dinner party without a gift

This one depends on the time of day, with 24 per cent said they would expect a gift from dinner guests, compared to just three per cent of daytime visitors expected to bring something with them.

7. Helping yourself to food without asking

Imagine someone doing this at your place…

8. Putting your feet on the furniture

Just no.

9. Turning down food when asked

While we don’t want people riffling through our fridges, we also expect them to take the food we offer them.

10. Bringing around a pet without asking first

While most people said they would welcome your furry friend, they would appreciate a bit of warning.
