Green Party MP Julie-Anne Genter shares her wellness secrets

The politician credits mindfulness, yoga and getting plenty of sleep with helping her stay confident under pressure.

Finding a balance

Growing up in car-dependent southern California, I always struggled with my weight as a teenager. Then I became an exercise fiend and lost 20kg – but I probably pushed myself too hard in my 20s. In my 30s, injuries and other life events have taught me the best approach is actually to be kind and gentle with my body. There is value in mindfully resting.

Favourite meal

I love to cook, though I rarely get time when Parliament is sitting. I have a few favourite meals, but oven-roasted salmon on top of a giant pile of kale, silverbeet or spinach, doused in half a cup of lemon juice, half a cup of olive oil, sprinkled with fresh ginger and Cajun spice has been an obsession for a while.

Confidence under pressure

Mindfulness practice, being well rested and being prepared helps. I try to be myself and be totally honest in every situation.

Best holiday

Tramping the Routeburn and Kepler tracks. I loved it because of the stunning nature – it’s such a treasure we have in New Zealand, and something I really want to protect.

Keeping fit

I love mixing it up – cycling for transport, tramping, swimming, dance fitness classes like barre, CrossFit, playing sport like soccer or ultimate Frisbee, snowboarding. Variety helps me stay motivated and ensures it’s fun.

Word to the wise…

Women should know that it is responsible and vital to look after ourselves, not only others.

Wellness tip

My best wellness tip is to get plenty of sleep! At least seven to eight hours, as regularly as possible. Modern society tends to treat sleep as something that’s optional, or an indulgence, but it affects our health in every way. Metabolism, mental health, you name it, it starts with sleep.
