Lingerie rules

From not wearing the right size bra to being careless with underwear washing – these are the seven deadly underwear sins you should break today.

Not being fitted for a bra

Yes, we all like to think we know what size we are, but your true size might differ massively from the one you’re wearing. Two words: get fitted. Any lingerie department worth their salt have staff trained in this practice, which means you can get the perfect fit every time.

Not taking into account body type

There’s not a one style fits all model when it comes to brassieres. Differences in shape and size can mean you are more suited to a balcony than a plunge, better off in an underwired than triangle cup. Either way, a professional bra fitter should be able to suggest some good styles to suit both your life and your shape. Plus, it’s always good to have a few different styles for varying outfits.

Not buying a sports bra

Do not wear a normal bra while out running of exercising. The ligaments in the breasts, once stretched, cannot spring back to their original shape, therefore it’s important to prevent this from happening by wearuing a well-fitting sports bra.

Wearing ill-fitting knickers

We often overlook knickers when it comes to underwear, with the emphasis being on getting a well-fitting bra instead. But badly fitting undergarments can create unsightly lines and more importantly be uncomfortable for the wearer. For tight-fitting garments, g-strings or no-VPL underwear is usually recommended, although any with smooth flat seaming should give you the look you want.

Not washing and replacing enough

How often do you overhaul your underwear drawer? According to the experts we should be completely replacing our pants and bras every three to six months – due to the amount of wear they get. This is obviously less true of fancy lingerie, that you might wear every so often.

Owning too many of the wrong bras

Are you guilty of owning ten bras that all serve the same purpose? Think of them more functionally and you’ll be on the right track for building up your collection. You should have comfortable bras that can be worn day to day, the perfect t-shirt bra for a smooth silhouette, a sports bra, a strapless one for skimpy outfits and a ‘Saturday night’ bra that’s pretty and special.

The experts also recommend choosing skin toned colours where possible as these are versatile for many outfits.

Not washing lingerie correctly

When you’re doing the laundry, it’s easy to just chuck underwear in with the rest of it and get the wash done, but delicates like these will lose their shape and colour if you don’t care for them correctly. Most lingerie shops now sell lingerie bags, so if you do machine wash, you can at least protect them a little by putting them in the bag. If you can be bothered, a hand wash is best.
