Oval Face – Liv Tyler

Cat eye lens

If you have an oval face shape you’re lucky because most styles of sunglasses will suit you. However, to make the most fashion impact opt for a cat eye frame. This dramatic shape can take a classic outfit to the next level in the style stakes. Right: Lauren in milky berry, $250, Verge.

Butterfly lens

If you’ve struggled to find shades that suit you, you may have a heart-shape face. Those with heart faces tend to have a wider forehead and sharper chin so the larger lens of butterfly sunglasses will balance your face. Left: Ralph in black/grey, $160, Ralph Lauren at Sunglass Hut.

Square lens

A round face has notable curves and less angular features, so to find the most flattering frames avoid round shapes. Square sunglasses are perfect as they’ll help elongate your face as well as making a fashion statement. Right: Anna in streaky grey, $357, Kate Sylvester.

Square face – Jessica Biel

Round lens

If you have a square face shape, avoid any more sharp angles when it comes to selecting sunglasses. A square face is able to carry off a number of styles but the more circular the frame, the more flattering the look. Left: Lolita 60s, $32, Topshop.

Aviators

There’s a reason aviator sunglasses are a classic; they work for every face shape. If you’re looking to invest in frames that will last season after season, pick this perennial favourite. Right: Dolce & Gabbana gold aviators, $404, Asos.

On trend: coloured lenses

This season sees a big return to coloured lenses. Most hued lenses are purely for show and won’t affect vision but pink shades are proven to be great in low light conditions. Purple: Jenny Clubmasters, $33, Forever New. Blue: Michael Kors Chelsea aviators, $239, Asos. Pink: Maze in dusty pink/gold, $349, Karen Walker.
