Naomi Watts lands a starring role in the Game of Thrones prequel

She'll be playing "a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret."

Naomi Watts has signed on to star in the Game of Thrones prequel.

The Australian actress will lead the ensemble cast for the pilot of the HBO series, from Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.

According to Variety, Naomi’s character is being kept under wraps but has been described as “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

The untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, and will introduce viewers to an entirely different set of storylines and characters.

Goldman and Martin’s spin-off will “chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.”

A statement from HBO reveals the new series will take viewers to unexpected places as it explores the world before GoT.

“From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend – it’s not the story we think we know.”

Fans will not be seeing their favourite GoT characters in the prequel.

Unfortunately, fans have a while to wait before the new project hits our screens.

Though we don’t yet have a premiere date for the prequel, the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones isn’t due to air until 2019. If the hype is anything to go by though, it will be more than worth the wait.
