As apocalyptic show Fear the Walking Dead continues its thrilling second season, we catch up with Kiwi lead Cliff Curtis, who plays patriarch Travis, in LA.
What a huge couple of years you’ve had. How does it feel?
Life is good! Work’s going well, I’ve got a TV show here and back home they’ve just got Risen, so I’ve been doing interviews all about Jesus. It’s all really good.
What can you tell us about season two of Fear the Walking Dead?
Not a lot! But I can say that we’re refugees, we’re out on the ocean and we’re looking for a home. I keep trying to get them to put us on the boat and come to New Zealand.
Your producer told us they might make a compromise and take the show to Hawaii …
Oh, yeah, Hawaii – and then New Zealand!
You were saying when you joined the series that you loved being able to bring Kiwi traits to the character such as Travis’ surname, Manawa. Have you been able to bring any other local touches?
Not much because there’s so much happening with the apocalypse that the main concern now is, “How are we going to survive?”
How do you juggle your family with all the work projects you’ve had going on lately?
It’s tough, but I figure it out. We get them all together and go to Mexico [where the show shoots] and do lots of stuff as a family. The hardest part is finding enough time with school to get everybody together at the same time and in the same place.
Have you visited Aotearoa recently?
I haven’t been home since the Christmas break. I missed summer and when I get home next, it’ll be winter. The trees were about to bear fruit when I left home. I got the avocados, but I missed out on the plums and other fruit and vegetables!
