Kanoa Lloyd hosts The Project. She lives in West Auckland with her husband, Mikee Carpinter. Here, she reveals 17 fun facts about herself to The Australian Woman’s Weekly – and some of her answers might surprise you.

1. My most memorable teenage outfit is

I had a favourite combo in fifth form. It was a tartan mini skirt and Chuck Taylors with a brown knitted cardigan that I thought was so cool but was actually quite ill-fitting and scratchy.

2. My favourite pet growing up was…

My dog Simba. He was a golden retriever we got the day after seeing The Lion King and he looked exactly like a lion as far as we were concerned.

3. My fondest childhood memory is…

Being on my grandparents’ angora goat farm in Bannockburn, running around in the back paddocks, feeding the goats branches off the willow and riding around in the back of the Land Rover. They were good times.

4. If I had to choose another career it would be…

I always thought I would like to be a teacher but kept doing things in media and here I am. My high school teachers had such a big impact on me as a teenager.

5. The last time I cried laughing…

Was recently on The Project. Josh Thomson said something that just struck me in the funny bone and I had tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t talk, and Jesse was just sitting there like an absolute square doing a perfectly professional read down the camera. Very enjoyable for me but not a highlight of my broadcasting career!

6. The item I would save from a fire is…

A tiny little pottery jar that my mum made. I have saved it once before when it broke and I painstakingly glued it back together. It’s really beautiful.

7. The film or book that changed my life was…

The Handmaid’s Tale. It had so much impact on me when I first read it at about 19 or 20 because Margaret Atwood is a smart, capable, grown-up woman pointing out that it can be difficult to be a smart, capable, grown-up woman. There are a lot of challenges in our social structure that we have to overcome but Margaret Atwood overcame them and has gone on to create incredible work.

8. The four people I would have at my ideal dinner party are…

My friend Billy because she has the best taste in music and always brings a great bottle of wine. Ellen Degeneres because she is just so cool. Anika Moa because she is a hard-out laugh, and David Bowie, because he would just be fabulous.

9. When I need to feel grounded or calm I…

Do yoga

10. If I could invent one thing it would be…

A machine that could extract carbon from the atmosphere and somehow convert it into energy. I don’t understand science so it might not be possible but it would solve pollution and provide energy.

11. The living person I most admire is…

This might sound quite dumb but I really admire Jesse Mulligan because he is a massive brainbox, he is very kind and somehow manages to juggle about 45 jobs and three kids all at the same time.
