Breakfast weatherman and brand new Auckland home owner Matty McLean has won over Kiwi viewers with his cheeky smile, cheeky on-air-antics (and that time he accidentally dropped a C-bomb on live TV). But this isn’t his first stint on breakfast – he is back on the show after travelling about Europe. The Queenstown-raised Aucklander let us in on a few more secrets about his off-screen life.

The websites I check every day are…

1newsnow.co.nz. I’m not even being forced to say that. Facebook, because I like to quietly stalk my loved ones. And Buzzfeed. Give me a ‘Which Disney Princess Are You?’ quiz any day.

The movie I’ve watched the most in my life is…

Never Been Kissed. I am still obsessed with Drew Barrymore’s character, Josie Grossie.

My advice to my younger self…

You’ll find happiness when you’re happy with yourself. Oh, and that look you think you’re pulling off when you decide to try wearing collared shirts with stubbies? Yeah, you’re not pulling it off.

The song that always makes me want to dance is…

Anything by Beyoncé.

If I was stranded on a tropical island, I’d need…

1 Good music

2 Good friends

3 A good bottle of gin

The city I’d love to live in is…

New York

My typical week…

I work on Breakfast, so it’s an early wake-up call. I head in to work, chat to the team about that morning’s show, and start writing the weather script for myself that morning. I’m on air between 6am and 9am telling the country what the weather’s doing, as well as making a general fool of myself. After the show, I do prep for the next day/week, try have a wee nap if I can.

I play with my dog Otis, spend time with my partner Ryan, and keep myself entertained. And then I have to hop into bed, often before the sun’s even set, so I can get up at 3.45am the next day to do it all over again. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The person I’d cast in a movie of my life would be…

Eddie Redmayne because he is incredible.

My favourite day of the week is…

Saturday because I don’t have to set my alarm to wake up for work at 3.45am.

The book that changed my life was…

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling

My last supper meal would be…

Pizza – it’s the best thing ever.

My favourite quote or poem is…

‘Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.’ – Albus Dumbledore
