Being in one of the most popular boy bands of the day didn’t come without struggles for One Direction band member, Zayn Malik.
The 23-year-old who quit One Direction last year, to embark on a solo career, has opened up about his frustrations when it came to individual style.
The singer told Complex magazine: “There were certain restrictions in terms of the way that we could come outside of that young teen boy look. Mainly my beard, honestly. I wasn’t allowed to keep it. Eventually, when I got older, I rebelled against it, and decided to keep it anyway. That was just because I looked older than the rest of them.”

Aside from his designer beard the stylish pop star also discussed rules on his hair: “I also wanted to dye my hair when I was in the band, but I wasn’t allowed to.”
Since leaving the group he has put his stamp on his own style, going for a recent pink trend with his locks.
And as far as his relationship with model Gigi Hadid, he told the magazine how he balances fame and personal life: “I try to keep the two very separate.”
The young singer is getting ready to launch his debut album Mind Of Mine, available on March 25.
