Broadcaster Tony Veitch has announced he’s separated from his wife of under two years, Lisa Veitch, in a statement today.

The NZME radio host confirmed he and Lisa broke up earlier in 2016, and are now preparing to go through a divorce.

Speaking of the split on Friday, Tony said it has been “desperately sad,” adding that it’s something “neither of them wanted to happen.”

A statement released on behalf of the couple confirmed the split and read: “We continue to respect each other and remain friends. We have no further comment.”

Lisa and Tony married at Kelliher Estate on Puketutu Island last January, with Lisa stating at the time that she was “deliriously happy” with her new husband.

The couple purchased a four bedroom villa later that year in Grey Lynn, Auckland, where they resided until their split.

In 2009, Tony hit headlines when he plead guilty to injuring former partner Kristin Dunne Powell with reckless disregard for her safety. Her back was broken during the assault.

He was sentenced to 300 hours community service and fines $10,000.

Tony also paid Kristin $150,000 in compensation ahead of the court case.

In the wake of the court case, Kristin told journalists that Tony had driven her to hospital after the assault – where she had been told to tell workers she slipped and fell down some stairs.

Veitch separated from his first wife Zoe Halford in 2009.
