Thief returns Lupita's stolen Oscars dress

Lupita’s stunning Calvin Klein gown was reported stolen from her hotel room shortly after the Oscars last week. The custom gown was made in collaboration with the actress and featured 6,000 pearls, making it a very valuable piece of couture.

In a new twist on the story, the thief responsible for the missing dress has reportedly returned it – not because he had a change of heart, but because the pearls on the dress are fake!

TMZ reports the thief called them to say he had taken the dress from Lupita’s hotel room after seeing the door open. However, after removing some of the pearls and taking them to be appraised, the thief says he was told they weren’t the real deal.

After hearing that, the thief dumped the dress in a rubbish bag and left it in a bathroom at the same hotel, where it was found by police. Now, investigators are working to confirm whether the dress is the same one that was stolen from Lupita’s room.

In her statement about the drama, Lupita didn’t make any mention of whether the pearls were real or fake, simply saying she was “happy” about the discovery.

“I’m happy that it has been potentially recovered. It’s a timeless and priceless piece of art,” she told Women’s Wear Daily.

“Once it’s returned to us, we will be able to have the dress restored and archived, as it now represents an important moment for the brand,” Francisco Costa – the designer behind the gown – added in his own statement.
