Matt Whelan stars as Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner

The actor is staring in a series about the life and times of the magazine’s infamous founder.

Kiwi actor Matt Whelan staring in a new television series on the colourful life of Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner.

American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story is a 13-part docu-series which was filmed tightly under wraps in Auckland last year.

The show, which centres on the colourful life of the infamous 90-year-old, will feature Matt playing the part of Hugh in his younger days.

The show will draw from unprecedented access to more than 17,000 hours of footage and 2,600-plus scrapbooks from the playboy bunny aficionado’s personal archives.

“When I started Playboy magazine in 1953, I couldn’t imagine the incredible journey that was to follow and that Playboy would have such a significant voice in the discussion of our ever changing culture,” the man himself said of the series.

Despite limited details of the show’s production, it was reported last year that one extra was told to expect “plenty of nudity” on set.

While the magazine made a decision to scrap publishing nudity in 2016 when it featured Pamela Anderson on its cover, the magazine’s new creative director, Hugh’s 25-year-old son Cooper, that the magazine would return to form in 2017.

Matt has already moved on to his next project and is currently filming in Columbia for season three of the Netfix hit, Narcos.

He plays a young American DEA agent named Daniel Van Ness, arriving in Columbia not long after Pablo Escobar’s death.
