She wowed at the Met Gala last year in a ruffled pastel-coloured Valentino gown, but this year Lorde ditched the star-studded event for something more important – elder sister Jerry’s graduation.

Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor) flew back from the States with her mother Sonja to be there for the big occasion, with the proud mum taking to social media to share snaps from the event.

“Sooooo proud! @jerryflorence graduated today from the University of Auckland with a BCom & BArts conjoint,” Sonja wrote, alongside a video of Lorde lifting up her sister in front of the fountain at Auckland’s Albert Park.

“Me n @lordemusic flew back from the US just for this day. So good to share it with u Jerry. We are all so proud of u and Senior Scholar Of Arts.”

On Tuesday, Lorde took to Twitter to reveal she couldn’t make it to the Met Gala this year.

Lorde had recently been States-side to perform to thousands of adoring fans at the annual Coachella music festival, where she debuted a brand new song from her upcoming album Melodrama, entitled “Homemade Dynamite”.

The album, her first full-length release since the debut of 2013’s Pure Heroine, is due to drop on June 16.
