In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir Sorry Not Sorry Naya River opens up about her battle with an eating disorder and the abortion she had while filming Glee, in hopes of letting other women know they are not alone.
The singer and actress reveals that she suffered from anorexia as a teenager while coping with her parents separating.
“By the time I was a sophomore, I started feeling that what had begun as a game had maybe gone too far. I just avoided food at all costs,” she writes. “I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it.”
Naya also reveals that in 2010 she found out she was pregnant with her now-husband Ryan Dorsey’s child, a few weeks after breaking up with him to focus on her career.
She kept the pregnancy a secret from Ryan, and made the heartbreaking decision to have the pregnancy terminated on her day off from filming Glee.
“It was very scary to open up about everything. It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.” She says.
Naya and Ryan are now married, and have one son.
“I hope he will read it one day,” she says of the book. “I hope it gives him a better perspective on the issues women face.”
