Block winners’ bittersweet split

After winning the latest season of The Block NZ, we find out what's next for DIY duo Brooke Davies and Mitch Thompson

They’ve proven they’ve got the drive and dogged determination to succeed, so when The Block NZ: Villa Wars 2015 champions set their mind to building their first family home in Queenstown one year ago, there was no question they would nail it.

But even Brooke Davies and Mitch Thompson – who bagged an impressive $290,000 on auction night – are surprised by how quickly their dream has come true.

What was a pipe dream is just a step away from becoming reality for the Christchurch couple, now that they have the funds to get to work in the scenic resort town.

“We are just so happy,” says personal banker Brooke, 25. “We can’t quite believe how everything’s fallen into place. We feel so lucky.”

But it’s not just their cash windfall that’s helping their dream come true. Incredibly, just days after filming wrapped on The Block, Brooke was offered a new bank job in Queenstown – and she has been living there ever since.

“The timing couldn’t have been more perfect!” she grins.

However, the big move comes at a cost with Brooke forced to leave behind her plumber beau, 26, and their fur baby, a chocolate Labrador named Chopper, in Christchurch.

She says, “It’s
really sucked not being together, especially in that week building up to the auction, because all
we wanted to do was calm each other’s nerves.

“Mitch and I lived in each other’s pockets for 10 weeks on The Block and now it doesn’t feel right to be apart. I miss him, but it won’t be long before we are all together and then it will really feel like home.”
