Beyonce is standing up for the rights of trans youth following an announcement by Donald Trump affecting trans students’ bathroom usage.
The megastar posted a message of support to students on social media on Friday as well as encouraging her 64 million followers to share their own messages of support.
“LGBTQ students need to know we support them,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “Share your support to protect trans youth.”
Beyonce also shared a link to school advocacy group GLSEN’s social media movement “100 Days of Kindness” – a campaign which invites people to post messages of support to LGBTQ school students.
The singer’s social media post comes a day after US President Donald Trump announced a rollback in protections for trans students.
Under guidelines issued by the Obama administration, trans students had the right to use the bathroom of the gender they identified with. Failure by schools to comply with the guidance came with the threat federal funding could be withheld.
The current administration believes the issue shouldn’t rest in the hands of the federal government, but should instead be decided by state courts on an instance-by-instance basis.
The Formation singer wasn’t the only celebrity to take to social media upset at the government’s changes.
Orange Is The New Black star and transgender actress Laverne Cox wrote on Instagram “Trans people have a right to exist in public space with equal access.”
Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter writing “Just seeing the news removing laws protecting trans people. This isn’t about politics. It’s about human rights, and it’s not okay.”
Singer Katy Perry also expressed a message of support to social media with a post calling for protection for trans children.
