What makes you truly happy? My new novel, One Summer in Venice, is about a search by the main character, Addolorata, for the 10 things that make her happy – but compiling her personal recipe for joy is much trickier than she’d imagined. I asked some well-known Kiwi women to share their own lists of what brings them happiness. This week, Ali Pugh, co-host of TV One’s Breakfast shares ten things that make her glow.

  1. Summer holidays. Surely the best break of all and when everyone is the most relaxed. Our favourite place to spend January is stunning Golden Bay.

  2. My fiancé Jo [Barus]. Definitely my better half! Home is where he is.

  3. Music. Jo is a singer/guitarist/bass player, so it’s a very musical household.

  4. Our wee dog Clyde – he’s like a real-life teddy bear.

  5. Friends. I’d be lost without my bestie who’s been there through thick and thin.

  6. My nephews. Samuel and Thomas, my sister’s children, have brought much joy – and noise – into our lives.

  7. Weddings, especially if it’s high school friends getting married. It means a celebration and a reunion all in one.

  8. Travelling. I go to Japan  every year to visit my sister there, and I love vacationing with her in Hawaii or Guam if Japan’s too far.

  9. Sleeping in – even staying in bed until 7am feels like an absolute treat on a Saturday after five days of 3.15am rises.

  10. A ginger soy latte – usually straight after a Breakfast shift. It’s got caffeine, sugar and is immune-boosting!
