Hair care problems for older women (and how to fix them)

For most of us, our hair is our crowning glory but as we approach each decade, a number of changes can occur. At 40, 50 and 60, here is what you can do to take care of your hair.

Potential issues: Dryness and loss of elasticity

Maybe you used to wash your hair every day and now you can go several days in between? That’s because, as we get older, the oil glands in our scalp that naturally coat our hair begin to produce less sebum, which results in our hair feeling a lot drier and more coarse. On top of this, you might be colouring your hair more often to keep the onslaught of greys at bay, and using heat tools, such as straighteners and blow-dryers, to style your hair.

Solution: Return moisture and bring back shine to your hair with oils and masks. Try to give your hair a rest from heat styling by opting for products that allow you to style your hair without heat, or use a heat protectant.

Potential issues: Thinning and loss of volume

Tell-tale signs that you might be experiencing hair thinning are being able to see more of your scalp through your hair, a parting that is getting wider or just a noticeable loss of volume when you run your fingers through your locks. An alarming amount of hair in your brush can be another signal but keep in mind that it’s normal to lose around 100 hairs every day, and where you are at with your hair growth cycle can make a difference too.

Solution: Using products that help to keep your scalp healthy and stimulated will in turn support beautiful, healthy hair growth. They might use natural stimulants such as rosemary and lavender or chemical ingredients, like Stemoxydine, which works to reawaken dormant strands.

You can further plump up your hair and give the illusion of having more of it with the help of styling products that have a thickening action.

Potential issues: Greyness and Yellowing

If you have chosen to let your hair go totally grey, the lack of pigment can make it more prone to picking up discolouration from external factors, including pollutants in the water, air and even chemical treatments such as perm solutions. On the other hand, colour build-up or difficulty finding products that will give 100% coverage can be an issue for women that choose to colour treat their hair.

Solution: Keep your silver strands looking bright and shiny by using toning shampoos that have purple formulas to counteract any yellowness. If you colour your hair, opt for an anti-ageing formula that has good grey coverage, but just apply it to your root area every few weeks to avoid colour build-up. In-between, conceal any obvious regrowth with a powder.
