Will and Grace star Debra Messing reveals what to expect of the show’s reboot

The much-anticipated reunion promises plenty more laughs.

It’s time to sharpen up your repertoire of catty insults and book a date on the couch because Will & Grace is back!

Eleven years after we said goodbye to the ground-breaking sitcom, the much-anticipated reboot hits New Zealand screens on Monday, October 2.

The revamped show, which follows the friendship of gay lawyer Will (played by Eric McCormack, 54) his straight flatmate Grace Adler (played by Debra Messing, 49) and their pals Jack (Sean Hayes, 47) and Karen (Megan Mullally, 58), promises to be every bit as hilarious as the first time round – so much so that a second season has already been ordered!

Says flame-haired Debra of the cast’s reunion, “I always thought about the four of us as being like an orchestra, and each of us playing a different instrument and creating a musical together. Comedy is music. Once we started playing the music again, it was like, ‘Oh, I know how this song goes.’”

The sitcom has been credited with shifting mainstream attitudes toward the gay community and Canadian-born Eric says it took a few years before he realised the show’s impact.

“Old women that had never met a gay man in their life were like, ‘I hope Will finds a nice boy.’”

Sean, meanwhile, is brushing off criticism that he is playing up to a gay stereotype because of his character’s unashamedly camp behaviour.

He insists, “I find Jack’s level of gay to be a ridiculous subject to discuss. How can you be too gay? I’m a gay guy and I act like Jack in real life sometimes.”

Will & Grace starts October 2 on TVNZ 2.
