Paleo pride

My inbox is full of amazing stories of Kiwis and Aussies who’ve overhauled their lives as a result of following the paleo way. We’ve created a powerful movement, with people sharing stories about how simple [diet] changes have allowed them to live without pain, lack of energy or low self-esteem.

Finish this sentence. In my fridge, you’ll always find…

Coconut oil, eggs, lots of fresh seasonal veges, fermented veges and bone broth.

The biggest myth about Paleo eating is…

That it is restrictive in some way. It’s not at all. It’s about creating delicious, tasty food from ingredients that benefit your health. There’s such a variety of dishes that nourish your body and mind on so many levels.

Living the dream

I start my day either with hot water and lemon juice or a turmeric or ginger tea, which all help to kick-start my digestion. If I’m lucky, I’ll follow it up with a surf or a walk on the beach. Then I get on the emails before Nic [wife Nicola Robinson] and I pack lunch for the girls and take them to school. I find if I exercise in the morning I enjoy a hearty breakfast; a favourite is scrambled eggs with roasted bone marrow. I like to finish the day in a mindful way. Nic and I spend about 20 minutes doing a short meditation.

My wellbeing

Wellbeing means the freedom to be healthy to do what I do. It’s about moving my body every day in a way I enjoy – surfing, horse-riding, walking the dog on the beach), eating nutrient-dense foods that are free from toxins and that support not only my physical health but also my mental health.

Eating organic wholefoods that come from as close to the source as possible means I have the mental capacity to achieve whatever I set my mind to. Wellbeing also means living mindfully and simply. I switch off from technology whenever I can and head to the beach to get the sand between my toes, the sunlight on my eyes and to feel the fresh air.

A message for Men’s Health Month

There is the saying ‘health is wealth’ and it ain’t an old wives’ tale – it’s totally true. Make your health a non-negotiable priority that’s even more important than any work you’ll ever undertake. Eating well is a form of self-respect.

The Paleo Way with Pete Evans airs Thursdays at 8.30pm on Choice TV.
