A New Zealand city has made a list of unexpected foodie destinations, put together by travel leaders National Geographic.

In a piece entitled 6 Unexpected Cities for the Food Lover our beloved North Island city Wellington has made the list.

In good company with Budapest, Hungary and Santiago, Chile also included on the shortlist, Wellington caught the attention of writers for its dynamic Cuba Street.

“Often overshadowed by Auckland, New Zealand’s capital holds its own as a food destination,” writes Nancy Gupta, who seems to have fallen from the hip Wellington neighbourhood’s charms,

“Home to trendy restaurants, cool bars, and hidden gems,” Wellington’s best places for a “food frenzy” include Matterhorn, Logan Brown, Olive and Laundry, according to the piece.

Meanwhile, the best beach eats can apparent be had in Maranui Café, Spruce Goose and Seaview Takeaways.

If you’re into doing it yourself though, writer Nancy suggest heading to one of three stellar Wellington markets – Harbourside, Underground or Wellington Sea.
