Theatre legend Sir Ian ocKellen was a veritable hit when he appeared in ‘Coronation Street’ in 2005, but the knighted actor has now announced he will not make another appearance on the show.
The 70-year-old star – who played conman Mel Hutchwright – says, “only last week, Betty Driver [who plays barmaid Betty] sent me a letter asking when I was going back.” But Ian feels it would be unrealistic for his character to return. “I was playing a character who couldn’t possibly go back. He’d left so much damage behind him, he wouldn’t be welcome.”
The actor, who is set to star in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’, might soon be unwelcome to the stage in real life too if he doesn’t watch his mouth. Ian has revealed the real reason actors call each other “darling” – and it’s not because they are fond of each other.
“Actors in a room have a shared knowledge of work and people in common, and to an outsider they are no doubt boring. If on occasion we call someone ‘darling’, it’s probably because we’ve forgotten that person’s name.” Peter, take note!
