While many a mother referred to their dog-eared copy of Heidi Murkoff’s best-selling guide What to Expect When You’re Expecting during pregnancy, there’s little of actual worth to be found in this rom com that’s “loosely” based on the book. Instead of offering a fresh take on motherhood, the film, which follows five women’s experiences of pregnancy and childbirth, delves into a trove of deplorable misogynistic clichés and dim jokes about morning sickness and incontinence.
The all-star cast includes Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez, who do their best with a dire script. But like pregnancy, the film gets more excruciating as it goes along, culminating in the horrendous hysterical crescendo that is the birth scene montage at the end. Keep your expectations low.
