Wham! reunites

First Take That, then Five – now Wham! is on the reunion bandwagon. Twenty years after they last performed together, George Michael has talked ex-bandmate Andrew Ridgeley into a one-off Christmas concert at London’s Wembley Arena. The singers, both 43, will be backed up by old pals Pepsi – who now lives in New Zealand ¬- and Shirlie for what is shaping up to be the pop event of the year. A friend reveals, “George is thrilled that Andrew’s agreed to perform. It was something George had thought about for a long time. He couldn’t be happier and can’t wait for the gig.” George – who’s been in trouble again recently, this time for possession of cannabis – began his first tour in more than 15 years in Barcelona last month. Critics hailed his efforts, with one reviewer noting that although George’s “trademark stubble is now greying, he still has one of the finest voices in British pop”. George and Andrew first met at school, formed Wham! in 1981 and had top ten hits worldwide. They were the first Western pop act to tour China, but split in 1986 following a legendary farewell show called The Final at Wembley Stadium. [11 october 2006]
