It’s the game that divides households, splits partners and causes havoc at family dinners – but now it’s having a big shake-up, and some fans are less than pleased.

Monopoly is an after dinner staple for many households, thanks to its family friendly nature (it’s no Cards Against Humanity) and ability to kill hours as the money-hungry amongst us grab as much property as they can.

But now makers Hasbro have risked infuriating thousands of die-hard fans, after announcing plans to change the tokens used in the game.

Between now and the end of January, users can select which of 56 new game pieces can make the final cut of 8.

The current tokens include a dog, cat, boot, ship, car, thimble, wheelbarrow and top hat.

New designs in the running for the final cut include references to more modern cultural phenomena – including emojis, the hashtag symbol and even a jandal.

Could we be bidding goodbye to Scottie the dog?

This isn’t the first time Hasbro has changed the tokens of course.

Since the game’s launch in 1933, the tokens have constantly evolved to reflect the times. Most recently, in 2013, the iconic iron was replaced with Hazel the cat.
