Legendary Welsh crooner Tom Jones may be famous worldwide for his hip-shaking tunes, but the ‘Delilah’ singer says his dream of playing martini-shaking James Bond never came true.
According to the ageing sex symbol, Bond producer Cubby Broccoli put forward his name as a possible leading man for the spy films earlier in his career. However, Tom’s recognisability worked against him as the filmmakers decided fans wouldn’t agree he was a believable spy.
“‘In order for him to do James Bond, would people accept him as being James Bond?'” Tom says of the producers’ dilemma. “‘Could they get past him being Tom Jones?’ – and so apparently that was what the problem was.” Lucky for Tom, his career has continued in fine form without the screen role.
