Sometimes fictional stories are accused of being too schmaltzy to be believable, which always makes me titter because, in my experience, the schmaltziest things of all have usually actually happened to someone, somewhere.

Take the story of Canadian writer Lori Lansens’ first meeting with the man who became her husband, for example. Strangers, they bumped into each other in a deli and got talking, eventually about books. He asked what she was reading and she pulled a tattered paperback out of her bag – he then pulled the same book out of his. They got married and are now living happily ever after.
