Girl power is taking over the world yet again! Yes, the Spice Girls are reuniting more than a decade after topping the charts with their first single, Wannabe.
All five singers Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell have announced they’ll participate in an 11-date world tour, taking in eight countries on six different continents.
The tour will kick off in Posh’s new home town, Los Angeles, on 7 December, taking in Las Vegas, New York, Cologne, Madrid and Beijing, before coming to Sydney on 17 January. They’ll then head to Cape Town and will finish off in Buenos Aires.
Despite rumours, the group which has sold more than 55 million albums worldwide will not be performing at this weekend’s Concert for Diana, because Emma is heavily pregnant. Mel C explained, “We’d have loved to be there it’s just unfortunate timing.”
Geri who left the group just before their record-breaking tour of the US, two years before they split said she loves being back with the other girls. “Imagine you got divorced and you’ve got back together with your ex-husband,” she smiled.
Victoria added, “We’ve forgiven her. I love all the girls. Yes, we argue, but we’re like sisters.” Mel C continued, “We used to have our spats, but we were kids then and we’re women now.” She described their comeback as “a collective decision made at different times”. When asked why she changed her mind about the reunion, Mel C replied, “A girl’s allowed to change her mind! This is something we’ve only been seriously discussing this year. The time is right. We want to have some fun and wanted to keep this announcement mysterious. We’re all very excited.”
The girls have six children between them and only one husband. When questioned about whether they make good role models, Geri growled, “The fact of the matter is, we are real people. There are millions of women out there who are single mothers. We are examples of our time. We’re not perfect and we never claimed to be.”
Victoria says there will be a big creche following the group aronud on tour. “oy main reason for doing this is for my kids, so they can see what oummy used to do. I’m going to be the cool one in the family for once!” She added that her soccer-star husband David will be joining them too. “He’s so excited about us getting back together!”
one of the 300 journalists attending the press conference commented, “A lot of you are mums or mums-to-be. Are any of you a teensy-weensy bit worried you might be too unfit to do the dance routines?”
Mel B retorted, “You don’t look very fit yourself.” She then launched herself at him and undressed him to reveal a not-too-toned tummy.
The Spice Girls’ comeback has drawn many comparison with that of fellow Brit group Take That. When quizzed about their male rivals, Mel B shouted, “Why would we want to talk about Take That? We want to talk about the Spice Girls!”
A more-diplomatic Mel C added, “Take That have had a fantastic comeback, but the one thing that’s very different is that we’re truly global. No disrespect!” Geri ended the press conference by announcing, “There will be five girls.” Mel B added, “There will be lights.”
“And there’ll be topless dancing,” joked Geri. “In the audience.”
“You have been spiced!” yelled Mel B, before all five joined hands and walked off stage.
