Really, what is there to say about a new Marian Keyes? other than, “It’s here!”? Those of us who’ve been with Irish author Marian since Watermelon just sit around between times, twiddling our thumbs and waiting for her to publish her next book.

Even those of us who didn’t know about her until Sushi for Beginners get excited when we hear she’s about to deliver a fresh helping of love, tears and laughter. By the way, those of us who have been with her since Watermelon feel slightly superior to those of us who didn’t know about her until Sushi.

Those of us who have been with her since Watermelon feel like we are her real friends, while the others are just Johnny-come-latelies. But don’t let the pecking order of the Marian fan kingdom put you off buying this book if you’ve never read anything at all by her before (even though you will indeed be at the bottom of said pecking order, I’m afraid.)

The thing is, fans fight over Marian because her books are so fabulous. I defy any normal human being to read one and not feel better afterwards. It’s like chocolate or gin, but without having to go on a diet or to rehab afterwards.

In The Brightest Star in the Sky, someone is spying on the inhabitants of 66 Star St, Dublin. on the top floor there’s sexy Katie, who has just turned 40 but is having trouble pinning down the right man; on the next floor there’s saucy Lydia, who terrorises her two Polish flatmates and drives a cab; on the floor beneath Lydia lives Fionn the jaw-droppingly handsome gardener; and finally, in the basement, there’s Matt and oaeve, who are very much in love but otherwise mighty peculiar.

With her usual sparkling wit and charm, Marian weaves a splendid tale, delighting us in this instance with the most precious of endings. That’s why we love her. Some more than others or for longer than others, but still
