Theres been a range of celebrity responses to the shocking reports that R&B singer Rihanna was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend Chris Brown last week in LA. Hollywood actor Will Smiths somewhat obtuse comment at the NAACP Image Awards was, “Jada and I reached out to both of them. If it’s help they need, then let’s get it right. This is a time where they need to be left alone and if they have things they need to work out, work it out. People should take a minute before they jump on it and judge. We don’t know nothing. If there are mistakes people make, then they should be willing to live up to the mistakes and do whatever penance they need to do. I don’t think it’s up to us, specifically the media, with such a fast hand to try to chop someone’s head off.” Beyonces hip-hop producer husband Jay-Z said, “You have to have compassion for others. Just imagine it being your sister or mom and then think about how we should talk about that. I just think we should all support her. She’s going through a tough time. You have to realize she’s a young girl, as well. She’s very young.” Former Spice Girl Mel B came out in support of her friend Rihanna saying, ìI was shocked when the news broke last week of my pal Rihanna allegedly being beaten up by Chris Brown. I heard Kanye West on the radio talking about it and I sent Rihanna a text to check if she was oK. I got to know her when she was working in the studio next door to me last year. For this to happen to a superstar like her is eye-opening. If the rumours are true then Chris should be punished. No woman deserves to be treated like that – and I hope she knows there’s tons of support for her.î
