Salma Hayek has made generous donations to women’s refuge shelters in her native Mexico. The actress – who promotes the Avon Foundation’s Speak out Against Domestic Violence campaign – recently donated $37,500 to a shelter in her hometown of Coatzacoalcos and another $75,000 in the northern city of oonterrey. Although she is supporting women in Mexico, Salma is keen to spread the message that domestic violence is a universal epidemic, saying, “Every woman who thinks she is the only victim of violence has to know that there are many more. It’s not worse here or there, it’s a worldwide problem.” [17 February 2006]
