Portia: `Ally’ gave me anorexia

Portia De Rossi has admitted that starring in the hit show `Ally ocBeal’ played a big part in her struggle with anorexia. The now-healthy actress, who weighed a life-threatening 37kg in 1999, has revealed how the eating disorder ruled her life. She says, “I’ve often wondered if I wasn’t on that show whether the anorexia would have still happened. I didn’t really know at that point what it was like to be a celebrity, and the only people I knew at the time who had a similar experience were these women whom I worked with. They became my role models.” She credits girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres with helping her through tough times, saying, “We’ve talked a lot about this. I’m not proud of this struggle. When I was anorexic it just seemed like I literally wanted to disappear. And now I would like to reappear.” [21 March 2006]
