PETA praises Peter

Kiwi director Peter Jackson has been praised by animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for his decision to use only computer-generated animals in the making of King Kong. The organisation released a statement in retaliation to the American Humane Association’s position that properly supervised use of animals is acceptable in film production. PETA claims brutal methods are often used in training apes and chimpanzees and that they often suffer horrendous neglect after their film “careers” are over. PETA, along with other animal rights groups, are campaigning for a complete ban on the use of real apes in movies. [9 December 2005]
