Not proud of Pride and Prejudice

An American Jane Austen appreciation group have slated the recent movie adaptation of classic novel Pride and Prejudice, branding Matthew oacFadyen “a lacklustre Darcy” and complaining the film is more sexual than romantic. President Joan Klingel Ray says: “The film is full of sexual imagery which is totally inappropriate to Austen’s novel. In one scene, a wild boar, which I assume is supposed to represent Darcy, wobbles through the farm with its sexual equipment on show.” Joan also claims Matthew “has none of the attractiveness of Colin Firth.” Director Joe Wright doesn’t seem too bothered by the group’s dislike of his film, reportedly commenting: “They can go jump in a lake.” [17 November 2005]
