Michael Jackson Pop portrait auctioned off

A 1984 portrait of Michael Jackson by Andy Warhol has come up for auction. According to a gallery representative for the seller, the portrait brings together “the uncontested King of Pop Art with the uncontested King of Pop” in an artwork made at the height of both of their careers. Andy Warhol was a world-renowned artist famous for his colourful silkscreens of many stars. including Michael’s beloved friend Liz Taylor. Bidding for the Michael portrait starts at a $1.2 million (NZ) but the work is expected to go for significantly more. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol portrait was $42 million (NZ) for a Marilyn Monroe portrait ‘Lemon Marilyn’ which sold in 2007. The auction for the Michael portrait will take place in New York on 18 August.
