Actor Jude Law has alleged that the News of the World hacked mobile phones belonging to him and his assistant Ben Jackson after they arrived at New York’s JFK airport, possibly paving the way for a US trial.
Despite the alleged hackers working overseas, US law would apply to the phones which were operating on US networks. News International would therefore be open to claims it had broken US federal law.
The alleged hacking is said to have taken place when Jude was staying in New York on his way to Canada to work on I Heart Huckabees in 2003.
A source close to the actor says, “The allegation that they may have been hacked while on private visit in the United States is of great concern to them both.”
Los Angeles lawyer Brian S Kabateck, who’s represented victims of wiretapping, including Michael Jackson, says, “If phones or messages were hacked while these individuals were here in the US, this would clearly be a criminal offence.”
