Grey’s Anatomy’ star Isaiah Washington has gone into rehab following the controversy surrounding his anti-gay remarks. In an effort to save his job on the hit show after he made a homophobic remark about his castmate TR Knight, Isaiah issued an apology and agreed to undergo a psychological assessment. Isaiah – who plays Dr Preston Burke on the hit show – became embroiled in controversy for making the comment to TR during an on-set argument last year. The controversy reignited after the Golden Globe Awards, at which Isaiah denied ever making the comment – but used the anti-gay slur in his denial. “The producers told him he must enter a program to examine why he would say such hateful words,” an insider says. In his apology, Isaiah says “I can neither defend nor explain my behaviour. I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I’ve asked for help.” Isaiah’s cast mates have been vocal about the controversy. “I feel really sad,” Kate Walsh – who plays Dr. Addison oontgomery-Shepherd – says. “I just trust that our show will deal with it in the way it sees fit.” [25 January 2007]
