Turning nasty in an attempt to drum up publicity for her upcoming remake of ‘oy Fair Lady’, Emma Thompson has slammed the late star of the original 1964 film. “There needs to be a new version because I find Audrey Hepburn fantastically twee,” the ‘Nanny ocPhee’ actress spits.
And in case we were in any confusion as to whether that’s a good thing, Emma gets her claws out to elaborate, “Twee is whimsy without wit. It’s mimsy-mumsy sweetness without any kind of bite. And that’s not for me. She can’t sing and she can’t really act, I’m afraid. I’m sure she was a delightful woman – and perhaps if I had known her I would have enjoyed her acting more, but I don’t and I didn’t, so that’s all there is to it, really.”
But rest assured Emma likes the character of Eliza! She says, “It’s high time that the extraordinary role of Eliza was reinterpreted because it’s a very fantastic part for a woman.” But whether she’ll find a woman brave (and not twee!) enough to play the role is yet to be established.
