This adaptation of the classic Jack Kerouac beatnik road story follows a restless young writer called Sal (Sam Riley), who follows madcap former jailbird buddy Dean Moriarty and his free-spirited girlfriend Marylou (Kristen Stewart) on a pleasure- seeking, cross-country journey. Though it centres on a road trip, this film goes nowhere, following episodes in the characters’ lives as they experience a world outside of social convention.

Set in post-war USA, it captures the uncertainty of an era and the beginnings of social change. It’s slow, plotless, but beautiful.
