Daryl behind bars

Actress Daryl Hannah, who has been arrested along with 16 others while protesting against the closure of a Los Angeles community garden, says from her jail cell, “I’m not thrilled about it, but I felt it was important to sustain my commitment.” The `Kill Bill’ star and about 25 immigrant farmers and their supporters were campaigning to save the 14-acre sustainable fruit and vegetable garden from planned demolition. The 35-year old, who has spent the past three weeks sitting 12 metres above the ground in a large walnut tree, explains, “I make a weekly video blog on sustainable issues for my website. I went down to the farm to shoot a segment on it and fell in love with it and the farmers and committed myself to stand in solidarity with them to save the farm. The subsistence farmers are from one of the poorest communities. This farm should be a model for sustainable urban agriculture. It needs to be replicated, not eradicated.” The farmland, where some 350 urban farmers grow vegetables and flowers, is to be turned into warehouses and factories. other celebrities who have offered their support to the farmers include Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Sheen, Willie Nelson and Danny Glover.
