Coro Street star in hospital

Coronation Street star Liz Dawn checked herself into hospital after experiencing breathing problems after Christmas. Liz, who plays Vera Duckworth in the soap, was diagnosed with chronic emphysema, an incurable lung disease that can cause heart failure, 22 months ago. “The illness left her feeling like she couldn’t get her breath out,” a source says. “She also felt tired and weak. Her family, friends and fellow cast members are deeply concerned for her. They know that the disease can get worse sometimes. Episodes like these are bound to be traumatic. At the moment Liz is sick – but with emphysema there are good days and bad. It was felt it was much better for her to be looked after in hospital. But she remains very positive and has the full support of her family and friends.” A spokesperson for the soap assured fans, “There is nothing to worry about. She spent a fantastic Christmas with her family. She has not missed any filming schedules.” [17 January 2006]
