BOOK REVIEW: Overwhelmed

Banish your fear of the long to-do list.
Overwhelmed by Brigid Schulte

Washington Post reporter Brigid Schulte found herself both revelling in her status as an overscheduled, overworked professional, and resentful – and struggling to enjoy life, with every task completed in a panic as she battled to get to the next item on her to-do list.

She wrote a story about it and found she’d struck a nerve, with thousands of readers contacting her to share their tales. While her study is American, there’s much here for the Kiwi reader, especially when it comes to celebrating overwork as a personal virtue instead of a lack of life balance.

Sheryl Sandberg advised us to ‘lean in’; Schulte suggests we ‘step back’.
