Jay-Jay Feeney’s South Auckland staycation

If you're looking to explore a different part of Auckland, Pukekohe has some great options for you to stay, play and eat!

Darling of the airwaves Jay-Jay Feeney didn’t have to travel far to feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of the City of Sails. She dishes on her new favourite ‘staycation’ spot – which turned out to be the perfect mix of relaxation, degustation and exhilaration.

After a tip from radio co-host, Paul “Flynny” Flynn, Jay-Jay set off to explore what may just be one of Auckland’s best-kept secrets…Pukekohe. “I thought I’d explore somewhere new,” the More FM drive presenter revealed, “and my co-host Flynny tells me that his hometown of Pukekohe is THE place to go.”

A short 45 minute drive from the Auckland CBD, Jay-Jay found Pukekohe to be a secret worth sharing – full of adventure, community, delicious food and escapism.

Her first stop was checking-in at Villa Te Soro – an elegant bed and breakfast, hosted by owner Helen and her husband Colin. Both Pukekohe natives who love to share their little slice of paradise, the pair created Villa Te Soro to have a ‘home away from home’ feel complete with a gourmet cooked breakfast for guests care of Helen herself. The replica Tuscan villa features three uniquely designed guest rooms, dreamy luxurious living spaces and even an Italian inspired garden for al fresco dining.

Next up was lunch at local hotspot Yakety Yak, where Jay-Jay found her favourite dish on the menu…chicken waffles! Right in the heart of Pukekohe town centre Yakety Yak is a breakfast, brunch and lunch destination popular with the locals that does all the classics perfectly – so if you’re after a great eggs bene, a delectable array of slices and a strong cup of coffee, this is the kind of place to kick-start your day. If the locals flock, you know it’s got to be good!

After lunch Jay-Jay headed in search of a dose of adrenalin at the home of racing – Pukekohe Park.

Just like all the greats before her Bruce McLaren, Greg Murphy and Possum Bourne she put pedal to the metal in one of the park’s Playday experiences driving her own car around the track with no speed limits, and to cap off her adventure she was taken for a spin around the course in a drift car by professional race driver Cam. The park’s Playdays are open to anyone with a license and are great way to have some fast-paced fun in a controlled and safe environment.

Following an afternoon of thrills it was time for Jay-Jay to find her zen at Pure Indulgence Spa. A secret no more, Pure Indulgence is often booked out (so get in early if you’re planning a trip) but for the lucky ones like Jay-Jay who snaffled an appointment what awaits is total bliss. Jay-Jay’s treatment kicked off with a soak in the outdoor spa, with the “essential ingredient” (aka a glass of bubbles) followed by a blissful hour-long massage at the hands of wellness expert Taylor.

Once she was suitably chilled out Jay-Jay headed back to Villa Te Soro for a bit of down time, and was treated to complimentary pre-dinner canapés and drinks before being driven to her dinner spot in town.

The final stop of the day was bustling local Spanish tapas restaurant Poco Loco where Jay-Jay enjoyed pina coladas and an array of the restaurant’s best dishes – croquetas, arancini, bruschetta and Gambas Al Ajillo (shrimp swimming in olive oil and garlic). Poco Loco provides a slice of Spain in the heart of Puke, and their menu is designed to be mixed, matched and shared – the perfect spot to enjoy good times and great food with friends and family.

Wrapping up a weekend of exploring Jay-Jay shared on her Insta that “Pukekohe is definitely a secret worth sharing”. For more things to do, see and eat in the hidden gem that is Pukekohe check out www.pukekohe.org.nz.
