A mother of four-year-old twin boys has come under fire for allowing one of them – who believes he is a girl – to wear dresses to school.
Emma Symonds, 34, recently appeared on a British morning chat show to defend her actions.
“Logan has been asking to wear girls’ clothes since he could talk,” she explained.
When he was 18 months old, Logan told his mother that he believed he was a girl.
After attempting to deny her son girls clothes, and encouraging him to wear more masculine outfits, she said that Logan became angry and agitated.
Desperate to help her son, she bought Logan a pair of ballet shoes. After seeing a huge improvement in his behaviour and mood, she decided to let Logan dress in the gender of his choosing.
“I still remember how happy he was the first day he wore a dress outside the house, and from that point on I knew I had to let him be who he wanted,” the mum said.
She now allows him to wear dresses, grow his hair long and paint his nails, and reports that he is a lot calmer and happier.
The morning show viewers had divided opinions on the subject.
While some defended the mother’s choice to let her son wear what he wants, others suggested that Logan was too young to choose his own gender.
“Such a brilliant parent. Letting their child be a child,” @ChatfieldGrant wrote on twitter.
“This is sad. Don’t dress your boy as a girl you’re horrid. He will be so embarrassed when he’s older and sees this,”@Ramsoutdere said.

Emma and Logan’s community have supported her decision, and Logan now attends school wearing the girls’ uniform.
“At the moment he’s happy still being called Logan, and I refer to him as my son, but that may change in the future,” she said.
