Thomas the Tank Engine turns 70

The beloved children's character celebrates his 70th birthday with a special life-sized cake
Thomas the Tank Engine

To mark the iconic character’s 70th birthday, Christopher Montebello (founder of bakery Let Them Eat Cake) came up with a very special idea: A life-sized cake replica of Thomas!

Measuring in at a whopping three metres long, one and a half metres high and over one tonne in weight, the cake is a celebration of the 70 years of friendship Thomas has brought to boys and girls everywhere.

The giant cake was made using 14,000 eggs, 33kg of flour, sugar and cocoa and 400 kilos of chocolate – talk about a sweet treat!

Christopher made the cake in pieces at his Melbourne bakery, before assembling them at a pop-up event for Thomas at Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station.

Plenty of young fans came along to celebrate Thomas’ birthday. Even The Fat Controller was there to join in the fun, thanks to Aussie TV personality Bert Newton.
