Parents often look to pop culture for inspiration when it comes to naming their children. Now new mums and dads are turning to video game phenomena Pokemon Go when they are choosing a baby name.
Pregnancy and parenting website Babycenter has reported a sharp rise in names related to the virtual reality game.
The website asked registered users what they had named – or were planning on naming – their babies – and the were a number of Pokemon Go-related ideas.
Among the names that had spiked in popularity was girl’s name Eevee, which has climbed 1,361 spots on the list of popular names in the past 12 months. Onyx (also a girls name) has jumped 2,173 spots.
The name of Pokemon’s main (human!) character, Ash, has also increased in popularity by 248 spots.

Babycenter’s editor in chief, Linda Murray, told BuzzFeed the Pokemon inspiration isn’t all that surprising.
“We see babies named after TV show characters, celebrities, and even Instagram filters. Millennials are particularly attracted to technology and ’90s nostalgia, which is one of the reasons we think Pokémon Go is already having an impact on baby naming trends among pregnant women.”
